Can I update critical patches through the emdedded device itself?

I have read quite a few threads and I am a bit confused with the
process of updating my deployed device with critical update patches.
Essentially, I have a build that emulates XP pro, and I have also
included the DUA component. Is it possible to update the embedded
device without connecting to a host? Meaning, can I update the unit
'stand alone'. The settings on the DUA were left with all the default
settings...

Service Account: Local System
Run on start: checked
Poll intercal: 0 seconds
Working Directory: blank
Command Path Type: Local
Complete Path to the Command File including Filename and Extension:
blank

I am assuming I can make changes through the registry?

Any knowledge on this will be much appreciated.

I can't help you much here but have you done this:

More specifically, check [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DUAgent\Parameters\Config\Sessions\0000] section,
"Type" should be set to "0" (Local path).
