Can I suppress the reminder to reboot my pc after downloading upda

I use auto-update but I do get irritated when it reminds me to reboot my PC
every few minutes afterwards when it may not be convenient to do so. Apart
from not getting the benefit of the update itself, is there a risk (e.g. some
sort of conflict) if I carry on working? Could I change this interval between
messages?

I mention this, because with every increase of functionality (new operating
system, software release, etc) I get an increasing sense of complexity and
stress that goes with it! I am increasingly feeling that I am 'under the
control' of Microsoft (and other software providers) in my work and leisure
and it is not a particularly comfortable feeling.

Anything that reduces this would be much appreciated.

It might be best to set Automatic Updates to "Notify me but don't
automatically download or install them." Then when the Shield
notification icon appears you can review/install at your convenience
and avoid the Reboot nag screens.
