We have all a shared access to a drive and quite occasionally folders are
dragged and dropped into others, this is a nightmarre. Our Guy in the know
doesn't know how to do this.
I would like to allow them to view create and very occasionally delete, but
NEVER drag and drop.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks in advance

Cut off the hands of the next person that does it, and that should get
the rest of the people's attention!

This is not possible to do at the share, you would have to disable drag
& drop at the workstations, which you probably do not want to do. The
file permissions necessary for the functions you want them to be able to
perform are the same permissions that allow the drag & drop within the
share.

You would have to have administrative rights and have a good knowledge of how
to create a "security policy" in administrative tools - or change the user
privelage of those user if there is a standard policy already which cover the
rules you want - in short it's not an easy task and should be left for the
ones in the "know".

Pete, the OP wants the users to be able to create and delete within the
share. There's no way to prevent drap & drop there as long as those
permissions are in place other than disabling drag & drop at the
workstations, and that's not a good idea since in involves disabling
other methods of doing the same thing (copy/cut & paste).

And whose head did you chop off to become self annoited!

More like whose head I *got* off, and I would have thought that was
rather *SELF* explanatory. ;-)

[In case you didn't understand my American colloquialism, it is a

Not really. You took completely different parts of the thread and
married them.

The first part was talking about other people, and the second was just
about me.
Peace! To you too.

Yeah, I usually mean peace, as in peace of mind. But in your case,
I'll wish you a piece of mind.

Thanks for the response, I had a feeling we would be stuck with this dilema.
Looks like we will have to be carefull. It seems a lot easier to drag
directories these days, maybe it's because it happens too fast and there's no
catching on to what just happened.
Thanks alot
Chris

Not at all. Actually it was quite a great day. Sorry you had a bad
one, but life is what you make of it.

expression up and bring about your inner piece. I mean peace.

I have my peace, thanks.

You're welcome and you are not alone in this sort of thing, I deal with
it all the time. About all you can do is point out to the users who do
the drag & drop how they are messing things up for everyone else and
hope they care enough to be more careful in the future.

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]My colleague and I wrote a small program that will do just that.
This utility can intercept drag and drop and copy and paste actions performed through Explorer or My computer and show a window with the option to cancel the operation.
This can be useful in situations where users inadvertently drag and drop folders and cannot locate them afterwards.
let me know if interested.
Thanks
