Is it ok to turn DCOM off? I am running Windows XP Home
Edition on my home computer and it is logging errors.
Here is the error report:

"Access Denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server using
Default Launch Permission. The server is:
{00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}. The user is
Unavailable/Unavailable SID=Unavailable."

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Jeff

Switching DCOM off is the wrong approach. You need to find out the cause of
the problem.

The unknown user is seeking access to Microsoft Word. You are the third
person reporting this problem in the last week. The last one had this to
say:-

"Explore.exe crashes every time I open one specific folder. This folder is
named downloads and contains media
files (Audio and Video) that I have downloaded, all other folders work fine
even other ones that contain the same
types of files. "

Does the other persons experience ring any bells?

He found a solution but what exactly was the problem is not clear and what
he exactly did is not clear

Do you have Word installed?

Speculating. It could there was an interruption of the download process. Has
your problem commenced after a file download?

Hope this helps.

Hey Gerry
How's the weather in Stourport these days? I grew up in
Studley near Redditch and remember happy days in your
beautiful neck of the woods.

PS Jeff - Sorry for hijacking your post. BTW Gerry,
Steve Gibson feels very strongly about not having DCOM
running as its a good way for hackers to get into your
computer - hence "MAP" suggestion to run DCOMbobulator.
Any comments?

Weather! Unless you look at precise statistics who can tell? Less severe
winters possibly? In any event the weather tends to be milder in Stourport
than adjoining areas like Studley.

Steve Gibson is a controversial figure. In certain quarters some of his
skills are admired but some of his views on security are not valued. I do
not have an opinion because I do not have the necessary skills and knowledge
to make a judgement.

This is the view expressed by Microsoft.
