can I retrieve an xl file that was saved as opposed to save as

I stupidly saved over an existing IMPORTANT file as opposed to using the
"save as" function. Is there any way to retrieve the original file that was
saved over?
 
Important files have backup copies made by the owner. Reload from that
backup. Otherwise perhaps a colleague has a copy you sent to them?
 
Unless you have a backup somewhere, the original file is gone forever.
