Can I protect a CF with a EWF that has an IDE overlay?

I’m trying to create an image that runs on CF, but I don’t want a RAM based
overlay, I’m aiming to have an IDE overlay to a disk on a second IDE channel.

Is this even possible? I’ve spent a while digging through the news groups
and technical articles and I’ve either missed it, or it can’t be done. Does
anyone know?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

I have no idea, but this will depend mostly on ewfntldr. support for overlay
on different disks.
ewf.sys will find overlay where ever that it is located. (This is a case for
RAM EWF anyway).

After FBA you have EWF overlay on HDD, right?
Then copy XPe files to CF, and try booting from CF with HDD present. Check
from ewfmgr what happens and if you see overlay.

Please let us know.

Rob, Slobodan,

XPe documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/xpehelp/html/xegrfEWFDiskOverlays.asp):
"EWF Disk mode requires unpartitioned space on the same disk that contains the protected volume. The EWF volume and Overlay,
collectively referred to as the EWF Partition, cannot be created on a separate disk or on a raw, unpartitioned disk."

I also think it must be a limitation of the ewfntldr.

This is also partialy true since in real life you can create EWF partition
on different disk. And ewf driver will pick it up.
I also think it must be a limitation of the ewfntldr.
This is most likely true.

Thanks for your help, it's a shame that it can't be done, maybe it could put
into the next service pack (if there is even one planned), failing that in
embedded lonhorn would be nice.

Cheers for your help.
