I was considering buying a laptop from a friend who has formatted the drive
and installed MS-DOS on it for use at our office. I have a full install of
WIN XP purchased through a licensing program. Can I install XP Pro on a
machine that only has DOS and no operating system? Or do I have to have a WIN
9.x/nt/2000 disk to complete the installation?

I'd say it is preferred that the machine has no OS on it - especially in
your case.
Cleaner install. After all - Windows XP *is* an OS.

Okay sounds good...iso you are saying that it "works" to do this. I don't
need a win 98 boot disk or anything like that...i simply put in the win xp
pro cd-rom into dos and run it from there?

thanks,!

Boot with your Windows XP CD.. (This may require you to change your system
BIOS to boot from CD first..)
Follow the on-screen instructions.
When it asks you what partiton to install on, delete the partition
information.
Create a new partition..
Continue following the on-screen prompts...

Have the machine DISCONNECTED from the INTERNET the whole time.
Turn on your firewall.
Connect to the Internet.
Download all Critical patches from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Then start installing everything else you need.

MS-DOS _is_ an operating system.

Regardless, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
