It won't work under Vista, so why should you care if you can
install it?

The Vista replacement for Outlook Express is Windows Mail. It has the same
feel as Outlook Express so you are not going to need to learn something new.
Outlook Express itself, unfortunately, will not install on Vista.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I have a desktop computer with XP, and I
just bought a new Dell laptop with Vista. I would like to have *one* set of
mail messages and contacts. I have several email accounts that I pop mail
from. In the past, with a previous XP laptop, I would store all messages in
one folder on my desktop and mirror the folder to my laptop, and point OE on
my laptop to the mirrored location. Then when I used my laptop, I would have
all messages and could simply mirror back all changes to the desktop. It was
simple enough. Anyway, I discovered that Vista's Mail program works
differently, and I'm sure, very well. However, it is not compatible with OE.

Any advice or suggestions? How can I maintain a single set of mail and
contacts? Some have suggested simply using a web site, but my message store
is over 20,000 messages and > 1 Gig in size.

One thought I had was possibly setting up a mail server from my home. Of
course, that would take a lot of work, but maybe it would settle the issue
once and for all.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Owkmann

Windows LIVE Mail will run POP3 and HTTP accounts..

How big is your hard drive?

There's no limit, AFAIK.
Messages are stored as individual .eml files.

Okay, so how does Windows Live Mail allow me to have *one* message store for
my desktop and laptop?

I don't think it can be done successfully. The risk of corruption would
be much greater when the message store is not local. Also, the account
password store would be corrupted each time a different user accessed
the store.

Not in my opinion. I haven't been able to set up my newsgroups with it
and it just sends garbage.

Then you may want to give more details about the problems you found
in the following newsgroup, and see if the people there can help with
them:

microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

I have no idea how to use that forum. I thought I might find help here
but that looks like a dead end too.

How are you managing to post to the Windows Mail newsgroup then?

Then you may have to wait for the smaller number of people in this
newsgroup who use Windows Live Mail to help you.

google groups I kept up with.

Newsgroups in Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail should work just like
they did in OE. What happens when you try? At what point does it fail?
Any error message?

Windows Mail comes already set up to use a newsgroups server that
contains only the microsoft newsgroups as one of it newsgroups
servers. If you want any other newsgroups, you'll have to add at least
one more newsgroups server. If your internet provider does not have
one, try these:

Did you try the two news servers recommended by Robert?
What about your ISP's news server?
Also, try deleting that news account, then restart your email program,
and recreate that news account.
