im planning on selling my computer with XP installed.
the XP is retail and not oem so I would like to remove access to the
product key. is there a way to hide it from those programs like the
one at http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
and all the other software that shows the key?

Why would you want to do this?
(Not that it is possible..)

After all, once you sell it, that copy of XP (if you leave it installed) is
not yours, so you cannot do with it what you wish.

If you sell your computer with your retail version of XP still installed you
must transfer the license to the new owner. That means they have the right
to the product key and the retail CD and any backups you might have made of
the XP CD. However if you choose to keep your retail version of XP then you
must completely wipe it from the system before selling (or gifting it for
that matter).

Greetings --

It sounds as if you're trying to get away with selling someone an
illegitimate license to use WinXP. In simple terms, commit fraud.

If you are not selling the OS along with the computer, you'll need
to remove it (format the hard drive) before transferring ownership of
the computer. If the OS is part of the sale, you need to also include
the installation CD and the Certificate of Authenticity.

If you sell it like that, you also sell your registration. Time to get a
new copy of XP.

no, i did not intend on keeping the licence for myself, what my plan was,
was that by removing access to the product key, support could be given by me
only and not by just anyone, so if he wanted to format the computer, (keep
in mind he is computer illiterate) i would be the one giving the support and
not the money hungry company in our location. (they want to charge 250$ to
do a clean install)

its no big deal guys, i was just being curious.
not only that but knowing about the 120day thing wanted to avoid someone
else from trying it on their own machine.
thanks anyways for your time.

First - he wouldn't need the CD key to get help from anyone.
Second - wouldn't it be easier to say, "Hey - if you need any help - call
me."?

yep, well like i said i was just curious.

If you sell the machine with the system installed, then you are selling
the system too, and must hand over the key, certificate of authenticity,
CD and documents, and *not* try to make any use of them yourself.
