The scenario: Download the full 30MB SP1 upgrade to my XP
desktop (with DSL), copy to CD, then move CD to my XP
laptop to perform the upgrade. Doable? Every link I find
on Microsoft's site wants to perform an auto upgrade where
it checks my current system, etc. Thanks!

I would recommend downloading and installing SP1 directly
from the following web site, instead of downloading it from
the Windows Update web site.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (direct download)
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default..asp

Note: Select "Network Installation" (32-bit)

Afterward, record the file to a CD.

P.S. Make sure to disable your antivirus program and close any
open programs before installing it.

Service Pack 1 is no longer available for download from Microsoft. You can,
however, download Service Pack 1a.

Get Service Pack 1a here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
Choose the "Network Install" option (in the right-hand column). This
download is NOT 30 mb. It is more like 130mb. This is the ONLY way you
will be able to download Service Pack 1a for later installation on another
machine. On my 1.5Mbit cable connection, it takes approx. 20 minutes to
download.

However, if you install Service Pack 1a, and want Java, you will have to
download and install a version of Java from another site other than
Microsoft's, since Microsoft is no longer providing a download for Java.

Get Sun Java here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Make sure you choose the "Offline" download

Get Microsoft Java here: http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

....download it to the desktop, burn it to a CD, then delete it from the desktop... It doesn't matter where the file is downloaded to - it can be deleted after the burn.

30MB is *not* the full SP1. that is about 130MB. The 30 is just what
has been found necessary in the express approach for the particular
machine where it is being run, may not be right for another, and is in
some ways unsatisfactory anyway, because some components might be needed
later - and not be there. A notable case is installing a USB 2.0 card
after running the upgrade.

So it is better to have the full version. Either, if broadband is
available, download the 'Network' version at
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default..asp
or order it on CD: down at the bottom of the page is the link to order
it. $10 plus S&H IIRC - though the corresponding UK page
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsxp/servicepacks/sp1.asp
links to provide it for free
