Can I download a legal copy of Windows XP SP2 over a old illegal copy of
Windows XP? If so, where can I purchase this download within Microsoft?

You'll have to go out and purchase a "Full Version" of
Windows XP Professional and then perform a "Repair
Install". Windows XP cannot be downloaded from the internet.

You can't download Windows. You must buy a legal copy & install it. And you
don't have to buy SP2 - it's free, but you do need a legal copy of Windows
to install it on.

You purchase a legal copy from any RETAIL computer store.

Then you install it - you don't download it. Helps to use correct
terminology to avoid looking like a dummy!

Well.........that's not completely true.

IF the OP wants to shell out money for a full MSDN subscription, then
Windows CAN be downloaded and burned onto a CDR. It just costs a hell
of a lot more than just buying a copy.

Please do not confuse 'download' - from Internet - and 'Install'.

You cannot download XP (unless you are a subscriber to MSDN in which
case you would not be asking).

You can buy a Full version CD of XP and then Install it over the illegal
one; as an Upgrade will *probably* work

Seems to me the OP is asking if SP 2 can be downloaded and installed on a
illegal copy and the answer is "maybe".

Wouldn't it be easier to but the legit copy and simply change the
serial number on the illegit copy?
