Can I Delete XP SP2 Backup Files?

Sweet-P

I have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and everything is working fine.
However, I now have a huge chunk of space on my hard drive taken from the
backup files that the upgrade created upon installation. Is it possible and
safe to remove those files from my hard drive? If so, can someone please
tell me where they are located and their name so I can be sure to remove the
correct files?

Thanks in advance,
SweetP

I looked at this article and performed 2 of the 3 things suggested. That
went smoothly.
The last one says:
Delete "THE" folder of files that would be restored by an Uninstall:
C\WIN\$NTServicePackUninstall.<

BUT under C\Windows, I find 28 hidden FOLDERS which start :
$NTServicePackUninstall

eg $NTServicePackUninstallKB821557$ to
$NTServicePackUninstallQ828026$

Do I simply light all 28 folders up and DELETE ?

Hi

Are you sure that there are 28 folders beginning '$NTServicePackUninstall'
and not '$NtUninstall'?

You re right Will..they're of the "plain 'ol $NtUninstall variety
w/o the "Service Pack" part.
The $ sign threw me off.
I found the single $NTServicePackUninstall and will delete it per the B/B
advice. Thanks for the extremely prompt reply

Hi

Those folders are from the SP1/1a Updates. As SP2 is cumulative and
includes all previous Updates, those folders can be deleted.

Sorry - there may be 1/2 exceptions. Have you installed any Updates since
upgrading to SP2? KB873374 & KB867460.

Thats the 28: $NtUninstall folders ?

Not that I know of unless SP2 did it automatically with its NEW security
settings

Last one I can find under C\Win is KB842773...and lower

Hi

I think you would know if they had been installed - KB867460 is an Update
for .NET Framework & KB873374 is for the GDI+ Detection Tool. Just to make
sure, please go to the Windows Update page and click on 'View Installation
History'. Otherwise the folders can be deleted.

Theyre both listed on Update but marked as "Failed"

So can I delete the 28 $NtUninstall folders?

Should I try to DL and install the two updates AFTER that ? I have no idea
if I need them

Hi

You can delete the 28 folders as the other two have failed to install. Both
of the other Updates for SP2 really ought to be installed as they are
Security Updates.
