Hi, I have a laptop - and Windows XP and am having space problem. I have a
large genealogy database (The Master Genealogist) on it. I have two drives C
and D. My genealogy program is on C as is most other stuff that I have. I
am at a critial space level - currently have about 11% left. What my son
noticed is that I have backup files from downloading Windows Updates - I
found the files and there are 47 of them. Each one uses a lot of space. I
listed a couple below to illustrate. What I need to know is whether I can
delete these files to free up space. My brother in law says NO.

The backup folders are located in "C:\Windows" folder. They'll have a weird
name like "$NtUninstallQ326830$".

If you don't intend uninstalling your Windows Updates those directories may
be deleted.

Hi

Yes, you can delete those, for more on this and other folders you
can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips, take a look here:

The post is about SP2 for WinXP, but it is relevant for SP1 as well.

Provided you do not want to uninstall the Hotfixes these relate to - for
example that one is described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326830 -
you can delete them.

I would strongly advise doing a fresh (Custom) install of that program
onto the other drive, and then copy the data files across to replace
the new empty ones. I regard it as bad to have such data mixed in with
the system; unfortunately some programs give no options to install data
separately from the program folder
