Can I change how and when internet explorer refreshes?

I will be in the middle of a game and it freezes up because, I think anyway,
internet explorer is updating information. Can I change how often this
happens. Mine seems to do it every 1/2 hour.

You need to determine what is accessing the Internet. Do this by looking
at the preferences of all programs that might update themselves. This
will not be Internet Explorer (a browser) but perhaps an add-on
toolbar, antivirus/antispyware software, legitimate (but invasive)
programs like HP printers, etc. No one knows what you have installed
but you, so you will have to look. Also look in Scheduled Tasks. You
may also have a "Software Updater" applet in Control Panel. Open it and
see what is scheduled to update. Change preferences of the various
programs as desired.

You can also use the Task Manager to see what is running and the System
Configuration Utility (msconfig) to see what is starting up with
Windows.
