I can connect to other wireless networks around town but the internet and
other programs that rely on the net will not work. The connection exists and
I see it working. No programs though. Does a firewall block the
connection...I have Norton Internet Security...can this affect my ability to
use the net connection that I have?
This is a very common problen when using Norton Internet Security.
Each time that NIS pops up saying that " X program " is trying to
access the internet , it asks if would you like to permit or block and
gives you the change to create a rule by selecting if it should always
repeat this action. This is how certain programs (even whole internet
connections) can be "locked out of internet access" hence not
functioning properly. If this happens you will need to reset sections
of NIS's firewall. Launch NIS.. Select 'status'. Select 'firewall'
and then 'configure'. At this point select the 'Programs' tab. If
there is a certain program that you're having problems with look for
that name. More that likely it will have "block all" , change it to
"permit all" which gives that free unrestriced access to your internet
connection. If you are not sure which rule is causing the
connectivity issue you can select and remove each program entry. This
will result in NIS prompting you again for what it should do when each
program asks for internet access. Hope this helps. Geek080561
