whats the best method to do this? would a formatted cd work? is a stick the
best option and would that work? thanks in advance.

This depends on the reason why you can't use XP to do this.

For a hard drive that XP won't recognize, this is the only thing that you
can do.

For a hard drive that XP does recognize, there are tools you can use to
recovery data (such as http://www.pcinspector.de ).

For just a straight copy, XP would work best. If there's a doubt about
virus infections - read only (CD) is the best way. If there's not much time
to do it in, then a flash stick would probably be best.

John thanks for the reply. Problems began yesterday after virus and spyware
scans then one program after another messaged that it was damaged. Then the
OS wouldnt load and boots into a loop. Anyway, I can boot into safe modeS
so, after work today, will try saving my docs, pics and itunes then a repair
with HP's OS CD.
I'm gonna try in safe mode to move/copy files onto a USB external hard disk
first. My question is will this device, or a USB stick, or the cd burner be
accessible under safe mode. Is cd burning software functional in safe mode?
Thanks again for your help.

Failing "Safe Mode" working, you can always get the Knoppix LiveCD and boot
your computer with that. That will bootup a version of Linux that runs
exclusively within memory and from your CD drive. You'll then be able to
copy your data files from your hard drive to your flash stick and save that
data before having to wipe everything to install XP again.

Of course you'll need to download the Knoppix ISO and then burn that to a
CDR. So this will mean you'll need to do that with another computer that is
able to access the Net AND burn CDRs.
