Can continue to write to CD-R even after closing it ?

( Background Info ) I'm creating a CD with some things on it to send to a
friend, using a Sony Vaio running WinXP Pro, and no added CD creation
software.

( Problem 1 ) In using just the Windows CD writing feature that comes up
when I pop a CD-R into the drive, it seems that I can keep adding files to
the CD-R even after I click on the "write these files to CD" link, and the
CD is removed from the drive (and put back in, of course) I thought once
you created a CD-R CD, it was closed for all further writing. Or am I not
closing it right or something like that ?

( Problem 2 ) I just talked to my friend and she couldn't copy files from
the CD I made due to "I/O errors", so I wonder if I did not close the CD
correctly. But I didn't see a final step to click on to finish the writing
process other than the "write these files to CD" link.

Thanks for any help!

There are two ways you can finalize a cd. You can
finalize the session which allows it to be read by
everything, and allows more sessions to be written. The
other is by finalizing the cd, this stopped all futher
writing to the disc. I don't know about the I/O errors
though.
