Can business contacts be used without exchange?

In our office we are trying to select the best option for sharing our
contacts in Outlook. I am not sure wether we can use business contact
manager on its own or if it needs exchange server. Sharepoint is another
option we were considering. What do you think?
 
Hi,

Business Contact Manager does not require any exchange server to work on.
BCM can be associated to a blank profile containing no email account as well.
A BCM Database can be placed on any machine and other machines connected to
it can access the database via Oulook+BCM.
