To use Outlook 2002 accessing my email, I have to first establish the
Virtual Private Network(VPN) connection. This is not so convenient due to
the unstable VPN connection.

I am wondering in the Outlook 2003 or the lastest Outlook, can I use it to
access email directly without using VPN.

Thank you very much.

Yes, if you are running an Exchange 2003 environment your mail administrator
can configure RPC over HTTP which is a new connection method for Outlook
2003.

Tips of the month:
-What do the Outlook Icons Mean?
-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

The answer is depends. It really depends on what the Exchange site is
willing to offer its customer base.

For example, Outlook 2003 can access an Exchange 2003 via a method called
RPC over HTTPS. While accessing Exchange across the internet this way does
not require a dedicated VPN connection/solution, the site could have decided
not to implement the feature. At this point you are right back to that
unstable VPN connection.

ps - i would probably opt for Outlook 2003 anyway. At least Outlook 2003
won't lock up if the VPN connection goes south. (assuming that you run
Outlook 2003 in what is called cached mode.)
