Can a bad CPU harm a MOBO?

Seems like my new MOBO will no longer work since I tried a CPU in it.
I have a new Gigabyte motherboard and got a monitor image with a new
Athlon XP 2200+ CPU. This morning I substituted an Athlon XP 2600
and nothing happened. Then when I re-tried the 2200+, it failed too.

Help please?

It's a big YES. If there is an internal short in the CPU, it is possible
that some I/O components on the mother board can be damaged.
