As you can tell by my signature:( my daughter feels that she is a computer
expert. Hence, she has deleted the calculator from Add/Remove Programs. How
can I go about recovering it ?!

Hi

From Start>Run type

calc

to make sure that the Calculator has actually been deleted.

Hi

Try this. Go to:

Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components>Accessories
and Utilities>Details>Accessories - enable Calculator, then click on OK and
follow the onscreen prompts.

The obvious solution to this is to ground your daughter! After that I would
get a copy of calc.exe off of another PC, and throw it in your /system32/
directory.

She is. And I do not have another PC

Put your XP CD in the drive while holding the "Shift" key. That will
prevent the CD from auto running.

Go to start > Run, enter: cmd.exe

At the command prompt, enter:
expand -r d:\i386\calc.* "%systemroot%\system32\"

replace "d:\" with the appropriate drive letter for your CD drive; e:\
or f:\ for example.

You should now be able to start the calculator application.

You're very welcome.

In Add Remove, click Add Remove Windows Components on the left.
Highlight Accessories, click Details (twice) and calculator should be
there with a check box to check, and OK, to reinstall from the CD

A small prize for anyone who finds an even HARDER method :-)

It was removed from Add/Remove programs. Re-install it from the
same place.

You're a couple of days late as the OP has already solved the problem. I
originally posted this because I thought he had already tried to do it from
add/remove programs and it didn't work.

Hi....my calculator function suddenly went missing from the START/ACCESSORIES
lineup...searched everywhere. Jumped to this help line and found your
conversation regarding the calculator and just wanted to let you know that
you helped me, too! Thank you!! One question, though...it did find Calc, but
it is still not part of the start menu, how can I get it back there so that I
can use it without having to "find" it each time?
Laura

Double-click START/ACCESSORIES. This will open an explorer window. Create a
shortcut to %SystemRoot%\system32\calc.exe

BTW: If you want the calculator available for all users then open the
following folder in My Computer: local disk\documents and settings\all
users\start menu\programs\accessories and place shortcut there.

Will,

Thanks, my AV program ate my copy of calc.exe, and I was getting very
frustrated about the situation.

I found that while it was gone, the box ( in Control Panel>Add/Remove
Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components>Accessories
and Utilities>Details>Accessories ) was still enabled, so I un-selected it, as if I was removing it, then started over to re-enable it, before it was replaced.

Thanks again!

Greg H.
