Calculating a date with term

I am needing to calculate a future or present date from a date 1 and term
e.g. I have an entry date 1 (June 2008) and a term (5.16) and need to
calculate the date 5.16 before or after my date 1
 
5.16 days, 5.16 weeks, 5.16 months (in which case how do you define a
month?), 5.16 years, ... or what ?
