Cached Mode on LAN

We are deploying Outlook 2003 with a default image to a user population that
will be using it directly connected to the 2003 Server. With desktop users,
I'm concerned that if we use Cached Mode the user will have to update their
mailbox periodically. For laptop users, it will and should be used. Cached
mode on the LAN I can see perceived mail delays.

Is this correct?

Thank you,
Mark

As a matter of fact, cached mode on a LAN for the desktop machines can
improve perceived performance. For example, our Exchange server's
connection is relatively slow, but since cached mode places all messages in
the OST before they appear in the Inbox, the use clicks on the message and
sees it right away because it's already been transferred to the local
machine's cache. The update happens automatically, by the way.

I really didn't envision it to be a performance problem, but I just don't
want users to have to hit send and receive all the time to get new mail after
the initial sync. Is this the case?

No, they shouldn't have to. Note tho that GAL updates/offline address book
changes may be problematic - by default OL 2003 won't update for 24 hours or
something like that.

No, it's not the case. Tools>Send/Receive>Send/Receive Settings>Define
Send/Reveive Groups. Check the "Schedule an automatic send/receive every"
box and put a reasonable value (like 10) in the "minutes" drop-down.
