Did she buy/install a cable modem? If so, did she notify the cable company
of the MAC address (a unique identifier marked on every cable modem, NIC,
router, etc.)?

Does she have a NIC installed in her computer? If so, did she notify the
cable company of the MAC address?

These pieces of information need to be "provisioned" by the cable company in
order for her system to work.

The cable company should also provide detailed setup instructions to the
customer, or you can find it on their website.

Cable TV (CATV) companies providing Internet service via cable modem. These
cable modems almost universally follow the DOCSIS 1.1 standard (check and
ask with your local CATV)

The service plans for home/residential users are usually of 2 types:

1.) Purchase Internet service (monthly fee) and the service fee includes
the "lease/rental" of a cable modem (my local CATV uses Motorola products).
Your computer (HP Pavilion 533w) will need to have either an Ethernet port
or USB port available to connect to the cable modem -- depending upon the
cable modem model that is being used. A "starter"/"new user" kit is shipped
or delivered to your address by many cable companies.

2.) Purchase Internet service (monthly fee), but the owner purchases (and
owns) their own cable modem. SOME local CATV companies have a list of cable
modem manufacturers and models that are supported by their local office /
technicians -- as long as its DOCSIS compliant -- it should work on any
DOCSIS cable system.

For further information, you local CATV Internet service provider should
have an informational (FAQ) web site:
