I know, I know, everyones having this problem but someone has got to have the
solution. I installed SP2 appx. 2 months ago. I began having problems with my
broadband connection going dead. I would do the whole unplug, plug, reboot,
repair and pray but nothing. Then I would do a system restore to the previous
day and all would be fine for another 12-36 hours. Then, without warning,
dead again.

Well this went on for awhile until a few nights ago and now I am completely
unable to connect. Contacted my IPS (insightbb) and recieved little to no
help. What I did gather from them however is that they are seeing the modem
and the problem lies between the modem and the computer. They suggested on
switching my Surfboard 5100 from the USB connection to an Ethernet
connection. So I went to Best Buy, picked up a linksys PCI ethernet card and
a new linksys cable modem. I installed the card and first hooked up my
Surfboard 5100 tried to connect but still no luck.

Called Insight again and went through all the usual ipconfig, renew,
release, winsock repair, changing cable, reseting-unplugging modem,
installing unistalling cards and drivers and still the 169.x.x.x . They gave
me the number for microsoft sp2 support.

After 1 hour of basically going through the same as above I then installed
the new linksys modem........still the same. They then suggested uninstalling
SP2, which I did. IT DIDNT FIX THE PROBLEM! I am hoping they call back this
evening but I thought I would throw this question up. Maybe it'll help others
out there that have the same problem.

I am using: XP Home, SP! now, no router, no home network, Norton AV2004 and
Norton Internet Security 2004.

I have done the disable firewall stuff, the safe mode spyware, antivirus
checks.

I will appreciate any help. I guess as a last resort it'll be the new hd and
fresh install......oh well need more space anyway!

Oh, btw, I had the TUN adapter showing up in device manager like others
have, couldnt remove. I have know idea whats going on with that.

Yes, I'm guessing you have some USB hardware in there somewhere. Try
flushing the DNS.

Restart windows, after you go to start/run, and type CMD, then at that
prompt type: IPCONFIG /flushDNS and then : IPCONFIG /registerDNS
