Ben

I just purchased a cable modem and signed up with my ISP.
For some reason, I had to give the mac address of my
network card to them. Why?

Any ideas?

Probably, your ISP traces the illegal activity this way. MAC can be easily
extracted by any sniffer so neither changing ISP nor network adapter would
help. From the other side I should admit it's too much for ISP.

Ben,

They want to make it difficult for you to connect different devices. Originally
they would have tried to charge you to connect multiple computers. Now you can
connect all you want, just connect a router to the modem, and computers to the
router. When you get a router, just plug the MAC address of your network card
into the router, and the modem will be none the wiser.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
