Have you tried running the following from a DOS shell (ada command prompt):

ipconfig /release *
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

If that works, put the above commands in a .bat file so you can just click a
shortcut to the batch file. You make no mention of an intervening router
(with NAT); if there is one then running the above commands at your computer
won't help and instead you will have to run the DHCP release and renew
functions provided at the router (for its WAN side that connects to your
ISP's DHCP server).

Have you tried yanking the power cord from your cable modem for one minute
and then reconnecting it to reset your cable modem?

Have you called your cable ISP to ask them to investigate why the connection
to your node is getting dropped so frequently?

Try going to www.dslreports.com and under tools run the tweak test and see
if there are any tweaks you can do.

Is TCP/IP for the LAN connectoid defined for a static IP address? Or for a
dynamically assigned IP address (i.e., DHCP)? The fact that "ipconfig
/release *" or "ipconfig /renew" report that the LAN connectoid isn't
configured for DHCP makes me wonder what non-standard setup you have to
TCP/IP.

When you lose the Internet connection, can you still "ping 127.0.0.1"? When
you have a connection, try running "ping -n 100 www.yahoo.com" (or your ISP
or whatever target domain suits your fancy) to get a decent average of how
many packets are getting lost. It's hard to know at what level would be
considered back but I usually call if I see more than 10% are getting
dropped. That's because the connection will slow down waiting for the
packets to get resent. Eventually with enough dropped packets it not only
gets slow but almost appears dead.

Do you have a router between your computer's NIC and the cable modem you
didn't mention yet?

When you say "cable" modem, I presumed that you are *not* using DSL. It is
a cable modem and not a DSL modem, correct?

Is it a wired connection from your NIC to the cable modem? Or do you have
wireless hubs or routers?

i have a static ip address and whenn i lose connection i cannot ping either n theres no wireless connection anywhere
my connection is connected to a router which is connected directly to the main modem...
plz any help

Hi Nick

Don't know if you've solved the problem yet, but this might be of help: from what I've heard, the Realtek 8139 chipset (built onto some NIC cards) is notorious for dropping off its ip address with W2K and WinXP. To solve the problem, you can go to www.realtek.com.tw and look on the home page under "Quick Links". Follow the link at the top about "8139A/B/C/D" and go to the downloads page. You should see a file, about 2MB in size, as the top or 2nd entry in the list. Download the file, unzip it, and run the setup.exe. This should extract the drivers for your operating system (actually for ANY Windows operating system) and your drivers will be updated for the card. This should solve the problem
Another possible way to get the driver is to go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and Scan for Updates. Windows Update will give you Critical Updates, XP Updates, and Driver Updates. Check under "Driver Updates" and see if there is an updated driver for your card that way. This might be the shorter/easier way to do it
Good luck! I work for a large Canadian ISP and we've seen this work for our cable modem customers . . . .

Karen

I am having the same problem as Nick with a cable connection that loses its connection regularly. The only difference is that I use a Netgear FA311 Fast ethernet adapter not a realtek. Your solution seemed to solve his problem, but I checked and have the most current driver for my card. In fact, Netgear does not seem to offer an update for this card on their website. Do you or anyone else have any ideas on why I might be losing this connection? The computer is connected through a netgear router and the other computer connected to this router does not lose its connection

Thanks, Eric
