My son tried to install some sort of DOS program and
screwed up the computer and I can't even boot it up. All
I get is c0000218 Registry File Failure. I've tried
booting it up (XP Home Edition) using the CD and for a
moment I thought I had it when the normal windows desktop
came up but then I rebooted and the error message came up
again and now I can't get to the recovery console because
I need a password (which I didn't set). Is there anyway
to get around the password?

There probably is no password if you did not set one. When prompted for a
password, just press Enter.

I'm certain it's asking for a password. Every time I get
to the recovery console, I hit R and then it asks for the
administrators password. When I try it unsuccessfully 3
times it shuts down. In one particular article I read in
Microsoft site it mentions that if I try to reinstall the
OEM software it will automatically write a password for
me. It didn't tell me what it was and now I don't know
how to get around it.

The article I'm referring to is here (2nd para after
