c0000218 error

I am working on a customer's pc which he decided to power off because the
system was running too slow. Needless to say the system keeps rebooting
itself and showing the above error.

I have tried kb330184 with no luck.
I have tried kb307545 and can only get thru the first step. Windows will
still not bootup properly after that so I can get to step two.
I have tried to repair XP Pro OEM also with no luck.

Most of the searching on the net points to 307545 to taking care of all the
problems but in this case it does not.

Any ideas?

I read the article but none of those pertained to my exact problem.

I talked to my customer and he explained that he was in the middle of
scanning a document. It was taking a long time and he got frustrated with
waiting so he simply hit the power button.
He has not added any software or hardware for quite awhile (I normally do
this for him).
I am running a chkdsk /r from recovery console now to see if this will tell
me anything.

Peter,
I ran the chkdsk and it said it found errors and repaired them. The system
continued to reboot.
I then reran kb330184, no luck.
I then reran 307545, the first part, and that failed too.

I told my customer this evening if I can find the problem with assistance
from the net by Friday night that is good, but if not then I will be
reloading windows and his software.

Hi, Spooky.

If you have to reinstall, can you use the "in-place upgrade" (KB 315341) to
preserve your customers installed applications and data? As you probably
know, the in-place upgrade will take as long as a clean install, but you
won't have to reinstall the applications and restore the data.

I was not aware of such an install, I will take a look at this KB and let
you know how it works. Plan on attempting this yet this afternoon.

Hi, Jerry.

The in-place upgrade is a life-saver for many WinXP users. But there is one
tricky part that trips up many users. Using Method 2 (boot from the WinXP
CD-ROM), DO NOT press "R" the first time it is offered, in Step 3. This
puts you into the Recovery Console - which is very useful in many cases, but
is not what you need now. Just press Enter at Step 3 to "install" WinXP.
Then accept the EULA and press "R" when you get to Step 5.

Many users find it easier to follow MVP Michael Stevens' version of the same
instructions:

Also, be sure the WinXP CD-ROM that you will use includes WinXP SP2. If you
try to "upgrade" a WinXP SP2 system with a pre-SP2 CD-ROM, the attempt will
fail. As soon as you get the firewall and anti-virus working again, visit
Windows Update to be sure you have all the current fixes in place.

After a number of tests I found out that the hard drive was failing and that
on top of the customer shutting down wrong was giving me the headaches. Not
until I pulled the drive and put in as a slave in another machine did I
notice that 'defrag' was having issues, then peridoc noises would come and
go. After a number of passes on the drive I was able to read all the info I
needed for the customer and then just decided it was time for another hard
drive. I have the machine done now and ready to return to the customer
tomorrow, thanks for the help.
