I had my XP working fine until I tried to install linux
(Red Hat 8.0) AGAIN on my 40GB HD and do a dual boot. For
some reason it didnt work. I HAD THIS WORKING BEFORE.
Maybe I did something wrong with Partioning! When
reinstalling my XP, I only had E:\ drive and a lot of
unused partitions. I decided to install XP on E:\. On
boot I cant find my C:\drive. Partition magic revealed
the following:
/boot(*.) Linux Ext3 101.9 89.6(unused) non active
Local Disk (E:) NTFS 39,095 37,6142 (Active)
(*) unallocated 7.8

I had backed up important data on my C:\. Is there anyway
I could get my data back? Please assist

You can google for Data Recovery Services... there are plenty of companies
out there who can retrieve your data... but probably at a high price. Last
time I was quoted (way back before XP was released, so over four years ago)
it was around $1500 for an 8.4gb hard drive.

Hope I'm not misunderstanding the problem, but one fix
looks simple--use FDISK or a linux boot disk (any old
boot kernel disk will do as long as it supports your
fixed disk and you have the linux disk partitioning
utility on it) to set that (Linux) partition active?

I have a vague notion that Boot Magic and Lilo have been
superceded by newer boot managers, and that may be where
the dual boot problem came from? Red Hat 8 box set came
with free support calls, have you given them a chance to
help?

Google for Christoph Grenier's TESTDISK

Great program! I've used it several times when someone has hooliwanged
their partition tables and/or MBR. It even found a partition on my
drive that I'd deleted 2 years ago.

Good luck!
