I use to be able to turn on computer and it would start and go to desktop. Now... Every time I start-up it prompts me to enter "user name" and "password" I wanted to BYPASS this because, this is my home computer no security needed for log on. I am using Windows XP Home edition, I have already tried the following

1. Changing and altering "User Accounts" , and disabling "password required at start-up" option in the CONTOL PANEL
2. Editing "regedit/winlogon" by changing "DeFault User Name and Password" (with password there was no setting I had to incorporate by editing Registry editor/Edit/New/String Value, then enter default password)

The results of my actions got my computer to boot up with my newly created Defult User name & password that I had edited in the "regedit", also displayed message "SYSTEM COULD NOT LOG YOU ON. MAKE SURE YOUR USER NAME & DOMAIN NAMES ARE CORRECT". I went back to "regedit winlogon" Made User Name and Domain Name the same, password option was not showing "again" in "regedit/Winlogon" re entered and NO PREVAIL
H-E-L-P,
p.s. I did already try to reinstall Windows XP no prevail. Thanks for any help in advanced!

Hi Bub,

Start/run "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes).

Uncheck the box requiring a username and password, click apply/ok and follow
the prompts to set up a default logon.

Most likely this is what the issue is, you are using XP Home and you have
installed .net framework and since XP Home does not use any IIS ( Internet
Information Services) then you may uninstall that from add/remove programs
and this will also take away the aspinet user in the user account, reboot
the system and this will log on normally from there.

Try this and if it doesn¹t work let me know.

I am writing after viewing your website. Wes, much appreciated. I followed your lead to the letter, unfortunately it did not make the logon dialogue box with user name and password disappear. all the suggestions have done several things. now instead of getting the domain and user alert not being the same doesn't appear anymore. the name and password are now filled in so all the personnel have to do is hit enter and the desktop appears. i'm at a loss as to how to bypass the final message

also, several of the computers boot up from a dormant and shut down stage when the mouse is moved in any direction [however slight] while on the mouse pad?? these glitches drive you crazy. in a way it's a nice perk unless you bump the mouse by accident. i've searched high and low and haven't found any relief to this either. any suggestions folks.

huck,

I don't quite understand what you want. There are several ways to setup XP
for logging in. For example, I am the only user on my machine, When I turn
the machine on, it boots right to the Desktop. No Welcome screen, no
password.

wes, i want the computers to do exactly what yours does..auto logon without anything...just skip right to the desktop. unfortunately, a domain was created and i've followed all your suggested fixes, to no avail. i'll try going into the registry and getting rid of the domains. i appreciate your advice. as for the mouse bootup, i just put the mouse in a side mounted usb on the tower...no more auto start
