Burning CDs in XP

I installed a CD burner with no software. XP recognizes
the device as a burner but the 'What do you want Windows
to do?' dialog box does not come up when a blank CD is
inserted. The properties of the CD show 0 bytes used and
0 bytes free. When I insert the same disk on my laptop
with Roxio, the dialog box comes up fine. Do I have to
have some sort of software installed such as Roxio?

There has been a conversation started about this same subject 48 minutes

I can hardly understand that you did not see it, why did you start a second
threat ?

Roxio's Easy CD Creator has a setting which by default has a popup asking
you what you wish to do when you insert a blank CD. That is an application
specific setting and is not common to all CD Burning software including XP's
built in software. You can install third party software like Easy CD
Creator - providing it is at least version 5 with the appropriate update
patches installed from roxio or you can use XPs built in software as it.

I don't believe that is correct. XP's built in burning offers the dialog
box of "what do you want to do". It has nothing to do with EZCD Creator.
I work on machines that do not have Roxio software and the dialog box
comes up. The only difference adding Roxio is you should get another
option.

Bob,

Is this the only burner you have on your system? If not, then it has to set
as the default recorder and recording enabled in it's properties. I have two
burners on my system and the 'what to do' window does not pop up when a
blank cd-r in placed in the non-default burner.....only in the default
burner. Also, I believe the XP burning software is provided by Roxio.

HTH,

Thank God and Thank You

Thanks to your post I have finally been able to send to
my burner again. I too, have posted about this and have
read numerous accounts on what to do and not to do and
nothing has worked till i read the information at that
site. We downloaded and installed a couple of different
Burning software programs but I personally perfered the
simplier XP way, and somehow it was turned off. Now all
is fixed thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Sassy

Thanks again.
