bullets and numbering

when I try to apply a bullet or number I get an Error Message andmy document
is deleted and restarted?

You need to provide more information

- the version of Word
- the exact wording of the error message
- the steps you follow when this happens (even if it's just "I click on the
Bullets button in the toolbar")
