new system built today, new seagate 200 gig drive ran disc
wizard, system shows drive is installed, but get NTLDR
MISSING on boot, checked cables, no os, tried to install
XP but cannot, everything seem to work {hardware} but
cannot install XP.
Tnx for any help looked everywhere, this seems to be a
problem when installing over previos ver if WIN, not new
install.

You need to boot from the XP CD. It has all the tools to partition and
format your drive, then install XP.

Tnx but I can't get passed the ntldr is missing to boot,
this driving me crazy.

Have you installed XP to the HDD?
Is the HDD a SATA drive? SCSI? IDE/UDMA?
Is all the drive in one partition?
Chris

Just to be sure - Did you boot from the XP CD? Go into BIOS and set the CD
drive as the first boot device, then insert the XP CD and reboot. Follow
screen prompts. It sounds like you are booting from the hard drive, not the
CD.

One other thing - Are you trying to do this with a restore disk that came
with your computer?

tnx for the help, this is a pc I built today brand new
everything, the only software I ran was Discwizard from
Seagate, could that be the problem? After that all I got
was the NTLDR missing on boot,I have rebooted a thousand
times removed and replaced every cable and card to no
avail, still same thing, if its a bios thing I can't find
it. Tnx

Sorry Steve boot seq is correct

That could be the problem. My experience has been, physically install the
drive and then just boot to the CD. That is not considering SATA, SCSI,
RAID, etc., just a plain old hard disk. With XP, I set the BIOS to boot from
CD and make my choices as to what I want to do. You can format the disk,
create partitions, choose whether you want FAT32/NTFS, whatever. Once you
boot to the XP CD, most is intuitive.

My guess it that disk wizard installed a little utility called EZBIOS. This
will mess you up trying to install an operating system. Suggest using the
wizard to uninstall this. Then boot the CD and install XP.

XP supports NTFS drives in the exabyte size. You're BIOS need to be able
to support this size drive as well.

Thanks for the input Rob. Like I said, I ain't into drives that size, I'm
not sure if that is really "DLA" or LBA or whatever. After reading my post,
I will have to go look it up. I hope I didn't mislead anyone.

Cheers, JAX

Can you post the make, model, revision, etc. of the MB and the date of the
bios. Have you checked the MB web site for newer bios, and checked the MB
support KB for similar problems and fixed?

Boot into the BIOS and make your CD drive the first one in the boot
sequence. Save then reboot with the winXP CD in the drive.

EXACTLY how does one do this please?

EXACTLY depends on your system and bios manufacturer.
You can find EXACTLY how from the link below.

Thanks for that :-)
I went straight to your site and you say:
"During the initial boot of a computer the BIOS supplier will be displayed."

I suspect that this is overwritten by the *Dell* logo which is all I see for
some 30 seconds...

Now what? <G>

(Can I get rid of this somehow?)

You say (for my dell Dimenson): F2 or DEL

OK, but *when*...?

Now do you understand why I used the word *exactly* ?

No offense, but my problem is that I find that experts such as yourself
always assume that the reader knows the bits you've left out!

There are 9 examples of how to access different DELL computers on the web
page I supplied a link to. How much more EXACTLY could I have supplied YOU
with no prior EXACT information from YOU? If your particular model was not
among the listed, would it be a stretch of the imagination that you might
get the idea you can look on the DELL web site? (that I did supply a link
to) I guess not, and I guess I should apologize for my assuming too much.
