Built-in USB 1.0 ports not responding after SP1a

I installed XP Service Pack 1a to my Presario 2701US
laptop. My built-in USB ports are 1.0 but I bought a
PCMCIA USB 2.0 CardBus card (Iogear GUF202) to attach my
hi-speed devices. I decided to download SP1a because I
thought I'd need it for the new USB 2.0 ports to work.

Now, the 2 built-in USB ports on my laptop are not being
recognized by Windows. I've uninstalled and reinstalled
them with no success. They are showing in Device Manager
under Unknown as "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Host
Controller." When I right-click and choose Update Driver,
I'm only given a few options and they are all USB 2.0
instead of USB 1.0.

The ports worked fine before I installed SP1a. When I
called Compaq, their only suggestion was to remove the
ports in Device Manager and then Windows would find and
install the controller on reboot. Unfortunately, Windows
is not showing me any USB 1.0 controllers.

Is there somewhere from which a USB 1.0 Host Controller
(driver?) can be downloaded?

You will need to reinstall the software drivers for your chipset. Check
Compaq's website (or is it HP now?) and see if there are updated drivers
for your computer. There should be new USB drivers that may be included
in other drivers as well. It is also possible that what you thought was
USB 1.0 was actually a USB 2.0 port that just didn't show up as that
because you did not have an OS that supported USB 2.0. Also, in a while
Service Pack 2 will be released and it is going to be a HUGE update. You
may want to try that as well. There is a technical preview of the
release candidate 2 available to the public for download.

Thank you. I'll look again at Compaq/HP as well as at the
link you provided. I looked at Compaq for USB Host
Controller previously, but not for drivers for the
chipset. My built-in ports are definitely USB 1.0. I
checked with Compaq prior to buying the Iogear PCI CardBus.
