I'm operating XP Pro and out of ignorance have been using the built in
administrator account for a year and and a half since the unit was new. I
just discovered how wrong this was when I tried to create a new user account
for my partner and would now like to straighten the system out and save all
of my settings to a new user account. Can someone please tell me the best
and safest way of accomplishing this. I've read numerous threads and at some
point they get so convoluted they lose me.
Thank you

Hi Iris,
Try to Create another account and assign it as Administrator and have FULL
Control/privileges.
Here is a link on how to achieve this ( although for creating Limited but
you can check Admin Instead):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/accounts.mspx

How do I transfer or copy my settings I've been using to this new
administrator account and will my current administrator account still appear
so I can access it in the future? If not how do I find it?

I may have misspoken when I referred to my current administrator account I
meant the 'built in administrator account', does this make a difference?
Will the built in administrator account still appear, I'm concerned with
losing it.

Yes you will not lose the built-in account, just create the new account and
assign it an Admin privileges and copy the data to it.
You will not lose the Built-in account it will be there.
HTH.

The built in one may not show on the login screen, but it will not evaporate
into thin air. In fact, XP will not allow the built in administrator
account to be deleted.
You can login to this account in safe mode.
