I know you said 'current', but if I wait for the Nforce4 SLI motherboards to
arrive then I would build the following:

- Lian-Li Silver PC-V2100A
- 2x OCZ PowerStream 520W OCZ520ADJ
- AMD Athlon64 FX-55 skt939
- (skt939 Nforce4 SLI motherboard)
- Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO 2-2-2-5 (2x 512MB)
- 2x Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB (SLI)
- Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum Pro
- Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 PCI to SATA RAID Controller Card
- 2x Western Digital Raptor 74GB SATA 10,000rpm 8MB WD740GD
- 2x Maxtor DiamondMax10 300GB SATA 7,200rpm 16MB 6B300S0
- 2x Pioneer DVR-A08XLC Dual Layer DVD+-RW
- Mitsumi FA404A/404M Floppy Drive / Card Reader
- Viewsonic VP201s 20.1" 16ms LCD Monitor
- Logitech Cordless MX Duo Keyboard and Mouse
- Windows XP Professional

Those are the basics, without webcam, video-capturing hardware, 802.11g
router and other stuff I would throw in on top. Are you paying? Christmas
is coming.

Unlimited budget, using the current hardware available, build the ultimate

There's no such thing because by the time you got it all together one or more
components would be superseded by something newer, better, or faster.

the ultimate would depend wholly and solely on what the user and the system
will be doing.
one mans treasure is another mans disdain.

and the parts you just bought would be half price.

True, that's why I never buy top of the line. I figure if I wait that $350.00
video card will be under a $100.00 in a year or so.

Ultimate PC? Read...

1) Purchased in 1991: Acer PC with 386-SX and a big 4 MB memory. Used until
upgrade in - 1997!!!

2) Purchased in 2002: Asus A7N266E, AthlonXP 1800 and 256MB of memory.
Typing on it now, but upgrading to a new machine, which is

3) Asus k8VSE Deluxe mobo, 2 x 512MB mem, 250 GB main drive and 2x120 GB
SATA striped to 240, DVD ROM and DVD RW plus a removable IDE 'hotswap'
drawer.

My point is, latest and greatest is, well, late and great (Ipaid over 400
dollars for the CPU/mem/mobo combo for the A7N266E) but in my mind longevity
is the ultimate accomplishment in the ever-changing world of computer
hardware.
Seems the 'ultimate' PC turns into a 'garden variety' one quickly...
