Bug/Feature?!

I have an access database with linked tables to SQL Server via ODBC. When I rest the pointer over one of the tables, after a short period a Screen Tip would appear. With the linked ODBC tables, the moment the Screen Tip appears, access just shuts down! Is this some security feature?! If so it's certainly lame! Is there anything that can be done with this Bug/Security Feature?

This is NOT a security feature. If it was, it would just simply prevent the tool tip from being launched in the first place. :-)
The question now becomes, is it the ODBC driver, the video driver, the mouse driver, or Access/Jet? Try the following to see if they help.

1) Go to www.windowsupdate.com and get the updates for your OS.

2) Install the latest service pack for your version of Office (http://office.microsoft.com). If you have Office 2000 or newer, click on Check For Updates.

3) Get the latest version of Jet and MDAC for your system. Access 97 would use Jet 3.51, Access 2000 and newer will use Jet 4.0.

4) Install the latest video and mouse drives from their manufacturers' web sites.

I understand how updates are important and often help to fix a potential problem, but I STRONGLY believe this is not the case here. I have the updated drivers/office updates/windows updates etc... This occurs on at least 5 other tested machines!

So I ask you to try this for yourself:
. Add a linked odbc table to a SQL SERVER database table using a File DSN.
. Select a desired table and check the save password box.
. Now rest your mouse over the newly linked table and watch...

Vuella! Access will close and it didn't even have enough time to remove the .ldb file!

I even think it happens on Access2003 - I will have to look into that - will post the results.

I can't be the only one experiencing this issue on more than 5 PC's.

If you do the steps mentioned above and do not end up with the same results let me know (and if you don't).

When I leave my mouse over the linked table icon or name, a tool tip appears with connection information and closes almost instantly unless I move the pointer in time.

At one time I recall this didn't happen. I believe it was before I got some updates for OfficeXP, or MDAC.

I'm working on an app right now that uses linked SQL Server tables, and
I don't have that problem. There are some differences: I'm using a
System DSN (though I think I had a File DSN at one point, and still
didn't have the problem you describe), and I'm using integrated Windows
security rather than a separate login to SQL Server. So there could
well be something about your setup that triggers the bug, which I'm not
doing. But the problem could lie in a number of different programs or
drivers, and it'll be hard to pin down.

What version of the operating system are you running this under? Do all
the machines that show the problem have the same OS version?

3 are Windows2000 and 2 are XP. But tell me how can a driver have a serious effect on Access? A mouse driver? A video Driver? Or are we talking about ODBC drivers? If you could try to emulate the situation, not using windows security and using a file dsn (remember password when linking). If it still doesn't happen, I just want to know if it can be reproduced somewhere other than here.

With this happening on multiple computers it makes it sound less like a driver (but I still wouldn't rule it completely out), but can a mouse driver or video drive cause this, YES. The tool tip is activated by the mouse and displayed by the video. In fact, a bad video driver can cause lots of problems that you may not expect. Also, printer drivers interact with video drivers and have been know to cause problems when you wouldn't expect them. I haven't seen a lot of this with printer drivers though since Windows for Workgroups 3.11, but I have seen it once or twice.

I don't have a SQL setup where I can test this against SQL Server to see if the problem is on that side.
