Bingo

Since I upgraded Quicktime to Itunes+quicktime mya browsers do not run
video clips properly. With IE and Firefox I have no picture, with
Mozilla 7.1 I have no sound or picture, though in every case the videos
buffer and run and the connection and Windows Media Player are
identified and verified by the Yahoo web site as correct. I have
reinstalled Windows Media 9 and browsers, but no dice

Bingo, I think when you upgraded Quicktime it took over all your media
files. For your pictures and video files rt click and
select Open with> Choose Program. When the Dialog Box opens choose
Windows Media Player and check the box
Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

Negative, When I installed QT+Itunes I did not tick the boxes to make it
default player. When I reinstalled Windows Media Player I made it the
default player for all the types it listed as possible. It plays these
files, though I do not have more than 2. I just need to see the news and
other videos on the list on my home page at bt.yahoo.com which I have
been able to play for years with IE or Mozilla. I don't have files on my
PC I need to play. Windows Media Player works OK on its own, and evens
open up Mozilla when it needs to, but Mozilla now plays the Yahoo News
Clips and other stuff with no sound or picture visible. The volme
control actually disappears as the playing gets underway. Firefox and IE
show a different skin, and the volume control remains and the sound
playse, but there is no picture.

There was another strange thing. After I had upgraded Quicktime (with
Itunes that I had to take even though I did not want it), I was prompted
online to upgrade Media Player from 7 to 9. As I was upgrading to 9, a
version 10 installation took over and aborted 9. Eventually I had to
roll back to 9 to stop Yahoo from telling me I still had 7 and needed 9.
Finally I reinstalled 9 from a setup file I had saved and that satisfied
the Yahoo online 'helper' which now tells me everything is in order -
but it is not. I have nothing with MOzilla and sound with no pictures
with IE and Firefox. Norton tells me there are no errors in the registry
or shortcuts, though at one point it said the file wmlaunch.exe was
missing from the Windows Media Player folder, and this is true, but
where does it come from and why does Media Player launch without it?

Bingo, it may have been a corruption of any number of files when that
switching to Ver 10 happened. Mysterious things
happen in the ethernet. It may be best to uninstall Firefox, Mozilla 7.1,
Itunes+ Quicktime and WinMedia Player.
Start over. Easiest way to do that would be to do a System Restore before
all this happened.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

I tried system restore straight off. After going through motions, on
reboot it said unable to do, please choose another restore point.
I repeated this 3 times with different restore points, same result.
Gave up. I removed Itunes and Firefox, no result. I hesitate to remove
Mozilla as Mozilla mail has 4 email accounts going back years and I am
not certain I can risk losing any data, names, passwords to mail and web
services. I had Mozilla backed up 2 weeks ago by Norton, but now the
backup facility in my Norton Systemworks 2005 seems to have disappeared,
along with the backed up files and the restore facility. I have never
had a problem with any sort since I had XP over 2 years ago. Now I have
mysteries. Misery !!! Very disillusioned re System Restore - it just
fails. I have all updates up to date.

Hi,
I have the exact same problem, the only difference is that it started
happening after i installed a windows update. So i uninstalled the updates,
no dice. I did a system restore to a week before, no dice. This is really
driving me insane i really dont want to have to format my computer.

Thanks for your support Edan! I have lost a certain amount of confidence
in the last few days. I still don't know if the reference had at one
point from Norton Systemowrks that the registry had been looking for
wmlaunch.exe in the Media Player folder was significant or not. It is
true that there is no file wmlaunch.exe on my laptop, anywhere, but I
have not been advised if I need it.
I am also annoyed that the excellent version of Quicktime which I had,
which when used offline could be expanded to full screen size, was
replaced when I upgraded to Qucktime+Itunes with one with a screen that
at most would expand to twice the small window size. This is not progress.
Finally this morning at 9.15 just before I was leaving Milton Keybes for
London, my phone line went dead. Since I have it diverted to my mobile,
it still works for incoming and te BT automatic test system decided it
was still working. I will now have drive back midweek and meet up with a
BT engineer to find out what has happened to that. ODTAA.
Let me know if you get a solution at your end to the browser video
problem. So far no further ideas my end, though I do want to know about
wmlaunch.exe - do you have this file?

Ignore my request for info on wmlaunch.exe if it is, as I now suspect
from a search, a file written by a virus which I do not suffer from.
However, if it is a genuine file that I need then I do need info.

It has gone a bit quiet here now (see the other messages in exteneded
string}. Must I assume there is no cure for this problem and I should
get a new computer or operating system and start again?

Hey i figured out the problem, at least it worked for me. Im running 2
monitors, so i disabled one of them and now it works. But that pisses me off
(excuse my langauge) because it was working fine with 2 monitors for close to
a year now and now thanx to microshaft's F****D up Winblows updates 2
monitors wont work, even after a removal of the updates and a system restore
to a week before this happened. Hopefully the next windows will work better
then xp, not likely though.
good luck

I have found the solution to this problem.
http://gemal.dk/blog/2003/08/07/use_windows_media_player_9_in_mozilla/
gives a registry fix. Apparently the problem has been around since 2003
By the time I found it I could not play a single clip on my BT-Yahoo
home page in ANY browser. Nor could I get RealPlayer to handle
anything at all.
This fix cured everything immediately.
Now runnng Media Player 10 with no problems.
I somtimes wonder if there is anyone out there besides me who actually
ever uses any of this stuff. At least H Gemal does.
