I have a friend who has a mac laptop. He has the ability to sit in a
meeting plug into the companies wired network, then configure his
laptop so that it can broadcast a signal so that others in the meeting
who are wireless can connect up to the internet and they can chat. In
other words he can use his Mac (imac??) to broadcast a signal so other
can pick it up.

Can this type of thing be done on a PC/XP. I have looked but am
confused by the information.

My questions are two fold.

1. Is there a web site that you can point me to that would tell me how
to do this on PC.

2. If you can do it in Microsoft land, can I do this on a desktop
computer as well as a laptop.

Thanks.

Steve,
I tend to think your friend is just using instant messaging programs like Yahoo, or he & his friends login to chat rooms.
And that each one of the machines has to make a connection to some network --- independent of your friends hardware, imho.

Did you ask your friend what IM program or service he uses?

Thanks Maurice,

A little more info may help. The way he found out about this was from
someone who was using his his desk at work. They both had Mac's
laptops. The one person was using the internet and my friend also
needed to get on line to do some work. So he showed him how he would
"broadcast" the wired connection over his wireless connection so the
other laptop could pick up he signal on its wirless connection. When
you think of it, its a prety good trick. The wireless card in the
computer is sending and receiving anyway. So why not broadcst a
connection.

He sent me a link on how to do this with a mac, unfortunetely it was
some sort of mac format that I dont uderstand. I think called
..archiveweb . I could not open it.
