Hello brink,

Have followed what you said and have eventually managed to delete an entry
in Contacts. Would rather not have done that as I just wanted to edit the
entry but it wouldn't allow me.
Now I try to add the same person and go into Contacts and select 'new' but
it doesn't allow me to do that either.

The only thing I haven't dealt with yet is the Norton.

Hello brink,

I sent a question in named 'CONTACTS' which is now on page 3 or 4 in which
you suggested uninstalling Norton along with many other suggestions. I have
spent most of the afternoon doing all these things and have uninstalled
Norton and removed and added my e-mail account again. I did at one time load
Avast but have now uninstalled that too. Nothing has altered my situation of
being unable to do any editing in the Contacts folder. Thank you very much
for your help, but can't seem to move on with this.

Thanks - Susan.

If you eventually get around to reinstalling avast!, I suggest you use a
custom install and tell it to leave out the part that scans email. Looks
like you need to do something else first, though.

Hello brink,

Yes I do have the 'New Contact' button on the tool bar, but the editing
still not hold.

Thanks - Susan.

Thanks Robert,

Will bear that in mind..........It's just finding what that something else
is first though.

Thanks-Susan.

Hello Gary,

Installed live mail a while back but have now uninstalled it as when I was
setting the defaults for mail and contacts I was in quite a turmoil as to
what live mail should be set at.

Thanks - Susan.

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
Kaspersky
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.

Sorry, mistaken post.

I've followed your problem's thread, Susan, and have been scratching my
head.

But your comment about "being [unsure] what [L]ive [M]ail should be set at"
makes me think that Windows Live Mail should be installed again, while
carefully configuring its settings. Don't use Vista's default location for
Contacts as part of Live Mail's installation.

Then test Windows Mail for restored functionality.

If Windows Mail's functionality is restored upon a successful full
installation of Live Mail, simply ignore Live Mail and return to using
Windows Mail. (I myself couldn't stand the suspense and would have to go one
step farther and uninstall Windows Live Mail to see if that's what's
breaking Windows Mail, but you've been through enough.)

If Windows Mail still does not function properly and you don't want to use
Live Mail, uninstall of Live Mail one more time, just in case that helps
straighten out Windows Mail.

In the meantime, I'll bet these guys are still thinking about your problem.
Let us know how things are going.

From a later post I understand that you have reinstalled Windows Live Mail
and are now able to successfully edit contacts in it.

Your theory is interesting, Brian, but I don't see how installing Windows
Live Mail (WLM) would restore any functionality to Windows Mail.
WLM is meant to be an independent replacement for Windows Mail.

OP said she "was in quite a turmoil as to what live mail should be set at."
So I inferred a faulty or aborted install of WLM, with possible overwriting
of Vista Contacts settings. If that was the case, perhaps a correct
reinstallation of WLM would correct any partially or misconfigured WM
settings caused by an installation performed by somebody in turmoil. (Maybe
OP chose C:\Users\Susan\Contacts for a WLM mail store?) Sure, WLM and WM
*should* be independent and not interfere with each other -- on a good
install. I was theorizing that OP didn't have the benefit of such a good
install.

Maybe OP will let us know if my theory had any substance.

(I bet *I* could break my Contacts by installing something and pointing to
Contacts. I bet you could, too.)

If all the suggestions fail to bring about improvement for you, the
best remaining solution is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

I suppose it is possible to break anything, but the average user
tends to accept the defaults rather than do advanced things like
choosing a different location for the message store. Anyway, it
looks like Susan is somewhat happy with Windows Live Mail now. :-)
