Briefcase problems

I have a directory with 40 subdirectories, one of which I want to keep
synchronized between two computers, the rest I don't. So I make a briefcase
folder, copy everything over, make 39 subfolders orphans, and leave the one
folder for me to update. A little complicated, but seems like it should
work. Only it doesn't. It works briefly, but soo, all of the subfolders are
made orphans. I would prefer to use offline files, but as I need to
synchronize a subfolder of a local directory, I don't see how that could be
possible. I've even tried Microsoft's SyncToy, but that doesn't seem to work
correctly either.

Any ideas?

I personally like SecondCopy from www.centered.com

(and I don't like offline files; I've seen a lot of problems).
