two things -
1= is there a proper way of searching for replies to my posts? I can never
find them which is why I use the stupid (BP) prefix

2=also in hotmail when I get a reply notification it doesn't link to my post
at all and I think it just took me to the wrong group altogether.

Yes, I'd suggest you use a real newsreader instead of the crappy
"X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000" that you are using. If
nothing else, even outlook express newsgroup is better than the CDO. Google
it.

Having different newsgroup reading software won't help with the search
facility of this site.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but if the reply link worked I suppose I'd
be ok otherwise remember the phrasing of my question or keep using the (BP)
prefix

Yes, it would because you can set your newsreader to find threads you've
been involved in, filter posts the way you want, etc. The other way to
find things is by using Google Groups Advanced Search and search for
your name, constraining the search however you want. But a real
newsreader is far better, more flexible, and more powerful. And I'm
sorry, but since I don't use the web interface I can't help you with
it.

Here's my usual cut/paste about Usenet:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are
some links to information about newsgroups:

Perhaps you don't realize that this is not a "site." It's a newsgroup. You can
read posts in the newsgroup, search posts, and do other tasks more easily using an
application installed on your computer that is designed to read newsgroups.

Or, you can continue to go to support.microsoft.com and access the newsgroups that
way. Your choice. The web-based interface to the microsoft support newsgroups --
which you call "this site" -- is more cumbersome than most means for reading news.

BTW, even the web-based interface will let you search for the author of a post, so
you can search for "Brian" (or Brian P, if you change your user profile), and then
you don't have to remember the precise wording of your subject.

It's not the search facility "of this site". It's the ability of the site
YOU chose to use, "X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000
Content-Class: urn:content-classes:message
Importance: normal
Priority: normal" to search.
As suggested earlier: | > Outlook Express Newsreader-Setting up

Try it, you'll like it, and you can search much much better.

See Tom's response for how I know.
If you do a bit of reading from the URLs I gave, you will know quite a
bit about newsreader software.

So this is not a website but a newsgroup and the site is an online newsgroup
reader program from windows (that is just a basic, 'token' program like some
other windows stuff and therefore = crap)

Maybe I have it right now?

With that attitude, you might as well leave now, because you have just
ruined any chance you had getting help. None of the volunteers in here will
give you much at this point. Too bad, because it is a good place to get
anwers, unless of course you keep insisting on using the CDO crap you are
using.

I don't have an attitude, I was just trying to clarify the situation as I
don't know anything about how newsgroups work. I think this is the first time
I've really used one. The trouble is with just typed words there is no sense
of tone or anything.

If you come back to the "newsgroup" all you have to do is type in the title
of your post in the search box. Do this after you get a message in your
e-mail and you should be able to find your replys quickly. Hope that helps.
