My computer came with XP Home pre-installed. The account name was "user" which could not be changed so I created a new account and deleted teh "user" account. Now when I try to create another account I get an error that "windows cannot load the users profile". Then .. to make things worse, I tried to reinstall windows which failed. It gets to putting in the windows serial # and tried to restart the computer which hangs up everytime at checking hardware. I now have the option to start XP Home or Continue Setup. Setup freezes everytime. Please help

Boy did you ever! See the link below for instructions for a clean install.
Disconnect all peripherals, i.e., printer, external drives, etc. Only leave
your mouse and keyboard connected.

Jax ...Thanks for the advice but I made a set of boot disks and the system still freezes when trying to check hardware. I cannot get to a point where I could reformat or reinstall my XP. Can anybody help?

Forget about the set of "boot disks" and boot from the XP CD. The CD is
bootable and all you will have to do for this to work is, open the BIOS by
using whatever key your "Boot Screen" says to use for setup. It may be the
delete key or an F key or a sequence of keys, it varies from one mother
board to another. It will tell you at boot. Once you are in setup, you will
have to look for the boot sequence and reset it to first boot from CD.

Follow the instructions on the link and, unless you have a hardware problem,
it will work.
