You should advise customers who own software--Word 97, Windows XP, Office 97,
etc.--when a replacement has been issued (at a price) and that service on
earlier versions has been discontinued.
I have been trying to get a solution to a problem that cropped up for the
first time last week and cannot get any kind of service, only references to
documents I cannot understand or make the proper selection from.

How about asking the question that you are having a problem on. I'm sure
someone here will be happy to assist!

Regarding your complaint, Microsoft has posted a great deal of information
about product support dates on their website, notably at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;LifeOfficeFam and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;lifeOffice#Office.

I don't see how MS would find you to send you a personal letter saying "your
software is obsolete", and I wouldn't expect that. I would think the fact
that Office 97 is now nearing its eighth birthday, and that there have been
three releases after that, might be a hint.

One place to look for help is the Office Assistance web page at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/default.aspx, which you can
reach from the Help menu in Word.

Besides the many articles in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase (which,
incidentally, is still easier to search through Google than through the
Microsoft search tool, although MS is working to fix that), you may find
answers in the MVPs site listed in my signature, and you're encouraged to
ask questions here.
