Bothersome Search Companion on left click

I've just gotten used to Windows XP, from using "98 all this time, and set
my system up in the "classic look" and feel, but now something's happened to
my file shortcuts ...I have to open with a right click because when I left
click, that search companion comes up asking what I want to find in the
particular file I have a shortcut to. I want my simple left click back???
