Bootup takes a good 2 or 3 minutes before the startup music plays. Things take forever to open. There is also a file that keeps appearing on the desktop called "~" which when deleted reappears at startup. I have scanned both with NAV and online with Symantec and come up with nothing. Any ideas?

How about some details of the computer. Amount of ram, type of harddrive,
speed of processor, etc

I am having the same problem and it just started a few
weeks ago. I have a 2.5 mhz pc running XP, 512mb. Checked
for virus, used task manager, Bootvis, Boot Log Analyser,
and disabled programs/files from startup but nothing has
helped. I can see the events taking place during bootup
but can't tell what is taking so long and can't get XP to
provide the necessary timing data.

As I responded earlier, I am having the same problem. I
just found and you might try going to START, Control
Panel, Event Viewer. When I did this I found several
applications that had a "hanging" error message including
Explorer. I have not found the cause yet but this is the
most progress I have made in weeks. Hope this helps with
your problem.

Sorry, I left out a step. From Control Panel got to
Administrative Tools then Event Viewer.

Oh yeh sorry - it is a brand new HP laptop with 40 Gb HDD,
2.3 Ghz Processor and 256K Ram!

Thank you - will go to these things and have a look! It
is really puzzling!

Sorry taken so long to reply but could not get back to
this page - by connection kept on timing out - had to do
this at midnight to get a good speed!

Will hopefully come back if I find anything!

Thanks
