Is there a way of avoiding the startup process, which currently presents me
with the necessity of clicking on either my name or Owner to complete the
bootup programe and reverting to the old way of startup ending directly at
the desktop?

Sure. You do it the same way as in XP:

Thank you for the reply, but where do I find in Vista "Run" it is not there
in Start? Or do I use an alternative, in which case what?

Hi, Thank you for the replies. I did as per the link and now I have THREE
choices to chose from on bootup. I also had a notice that the Password is
incorrect, but how can that be when I just entered it and confirmed it. How
do I get out of this now?

Zygy,

How many accounts do you have setup? You might check in "User
Accounts" in the Control Panel (Classic View) to see. If you have
multiple accounts that you do not want, then delete all of them except
for the Administrator account that is working properly.

Shawn - With all due respect for your knowledge (which I admire
greatly), I don't think it is a good idea to have only one user account
with administrative privileges on Vista. Because the System
Administrator (root) is disabled by default, if something goes wrong
with the one account it may not be possible to get back into Windows.
See MVP Jimmy Brush's tutorial about that here:

http://www.jimmah.com/vista/Administration/locked_out_of_admin.aspx

For our clients running Vista, we are setting up at least one extra
administrative user account for emergencies.

Just type run in your start/search right click on the item that
appears above and select run as administrator and follow the link by malke

Hi, Thank you for the additional information, but I would appreciate someone
to advise me how to remove the three names I get before I can proceed with
the bootup and what I should do, so that I get to the Desktop without the
necessity of any clicks! The link I followed does NOT do the job!

So, have you tried to go to Control Panel/under User accounts ... /choose
Add or Remove User Accounts.

Hi, The problem now is that I can only log-in on one icon, which has the
same name as the one added, (the third one (the second one is "Owner", which
I have not tried in case I will be unable to log-in at all)) which requires
password and the password I insert is being pronounced as incorrect,
although I created it in the "How to Log Automatically at Startup"
procedure. In the User Accounts there is only one icon with my name as
Administrator, so there is noting there to remove. I would appreciate
further comments from the knowledgeable ones, so that I can clear up this
mess I am in now!

In the "Manage another account" I have three Icons:- 1.My Name -
Administrator, 2.ASP.Net Account, 3. Owner Administrator Password Protected.
I assume that I log in with the first one. Which do you suggest I remove and
how?

Looks like you just modified the guest account. Why do you need to delete
any account. I agree with brink, you decide, but I would suggest that you
only choose whether to keep or delete the third one. If you still want to
do what you started out asking,
Go to Start and type: netplwiz and press Enter.

In the dialog box, select the account you want to use.
Remove the check mark from the "Users must enter a user name and password to
use this computer" option.
Press Apply.
A dialog will pop up, enter the password for the User account twice.
Press OK / OK.

The next time you restart, you should go right to the desktop and be logged
on with the account you selected.

Thank you for the posting, but when I did that last time on the following
link:-http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66966-logon-automatically.html
I was landed on start up with 1st Screen with a notice:- The "User name or
Password is incorrect" and a space for OK, which if I click on I get a 2nd
screen with now three Icons 1. Zygy 2.Zygy 3.Owner. If I click on the 1st
one I am asked for passoword. If I enter the password I used under the link
above I get a notice that it is not correct. I can log-in on the second Icon
without any problems and I have not tried the third one in case I will not
be able to log-in at all. Your comment will be appreciated

Or the Windows key + R

Not sure why. Try this procedure to see if you get user account control.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2 and then click OK.
3. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password
box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to
close the User Accounts window.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I enter control userpasswords2 in the Open box and click OK I get a
Window with the three Users:- 1.ASPNET, 2.Zygy, 3. Owner. (this does not
correspond with the 2nd screen on startup - vide previous posting) There is
no tick in the User must enter.... and Owner is highlighted. I cannot
highlight Zygy or ASPNET.

What is your suggestion I do next?

Can you guarantee that if I proceed with Zygy (on which I can log in) it
will not turn into unknown password protected icon like it did previously?

OK, so I will try it, but as a last contribution please advise me who should
I go to if I cannot log in at all after that.

After reading the "scroll" of doing such a simple task as managing user
accounts I think it be best if you start with an OS a little less complex.
Window 3.1?
