I had a hard drive that still has a bootstrap on it and xp sees it on an
external ide controller and tries to boot to it. How do I remove the boot
sector? I don't need to ever boot from this drive.

/mbr will refresh the boot drive???

Delete the boot files (they may be hidden) and then use FDisk. Start
FDisk and issue this command: FDisk /mbr

Also edit your boot.ini file in XP and remove any reference to the
other operating system.
