Hello All,

I have a Dell 8100 that came in shipped with
XP Home edition. I lent my computer to a cousin
of mine and after awhile it came back with
XP Professional on it. I didn't bother until
I got a hacktool virus last week and started
cleaning and followed instructions to even
download SP1 on the the Microsoft site and
I discovered SP1 couldn't be downloaded
on my machine because the Windows XP
Professional has an invalid product key.

I want to make my Windows XP Professional
legit by buying the upgrade but will this
do a clean upgrade and keep my programs
and other files. I can't seem to find
information about this on the FAQs and
in the newsgroups neither on the Microsoft
site.

Any advice will help...

Thanks,
Paul Llido

You need to perform a repair install using your
new Windows XP "full version" CD and Product Key:

This is probably a more useful link.
Click on the link below, or copy and paste the link into the address box
if using the web based newsgroup.
Change CD key.
